How Finding Freelancers is Never a One-shot Process

You decided to get external help for your business. Perhaps you decided to go completely virtual and have robust team of freelancers. Either way, you’ll be out there looking for the best freelancers your money can find.

Most entrepreneurs think that finding freelancers is just about putting up a project brief and finding the best freelancer(s) possible from the list of applications.

It’s not that easy; it’s also not a one-time affair. Here’s why:

No hiring without testing

 

You can’t just go with a portfolio or a proposal to pick your freelancer – each of those instances only give you part of the story. That’s why it’s a smart thing to start with small tasks (as paid trials) and then take it forward.

To do that kind of testing, and that too with multiple freelancers, you’d take a considerable amount of time. Testing your potential freelancers, however, is a great way to make sure you only take in the best of the lot.

It’s never permanent

 

You could do everything you could to find your team of freelancers, but just like it is in the offline world, no one stays with you forever. If you haven’t stopped working with a freelancer already, they might choose not to work with you and there could be many reasons for that.

Since it’s never permanent, you’d have to be on the constant lookout for freelancers.

Scaling or growing is imminent

 

Freelancers don’t work like full-timers. For them, you are a client and your work takes up a chunk of their time or available bandwidth. Typically, freelancers manage multiple projects at the same time and they manage their time during a day or week to accommodate your project.

Since they can only do so much for you, there could be a time when you’d have to look for more help especially when you grow your business or scale up.

It’s smart to play safe

 

With virtual projects, remote freelancers, and vague business scenarios, it always makes sense to play it safe. The more options you have in terms of potential freelancers you can hire (all tested, vetted, and eligible), the better off you are.

If this were true, it’d make sense to setup a continuous and systematic approach to hiring freelancers.
